The tradition of the Jack-o'-Lantern comes from Irish folklore. According to legend, a man named "Stingy Jack" tricked the Devil several times and, when he died, was denied entry to both Heaven and Hell. Condemned to wander the earth in darkness, Jack was given a burning coal from Hell to light his way. He placed the coal inside a hollowed-out turnip, creating what became known as "Jack of the Lantern," later shortened to "Jack-o'-Lantern."
During Samhain, people in Ireland and Scotland carved frightening faces into turnips, potatoes, and other root vegetables to ward off wandering spirits and unwanted energies. When Irish immigrants brought the tradition to North America in the 19th century, they discovered that pumpkins were larger, easier to carve, and more plentiful than turnips. Over time, the carved pumpkin became the iconic Jack-o'-Lantern we know today—a symbol of protection, harvest season, and Halloween itself.
